Good dental care is about far more than a bright smile — oral health is closely linked to your overall health, and untreated dental problems can become painful and expensive fast. Yet dental coverage is often left out of medical plans, including Original Medicare. A standalone dental plan fills that gap.
Preventive care — cleanings, exams, and X-rays, typically covered at or near 100%.
Basic care — fillings, simple extractions, and gum disease treatment, often covered 70–80% after deductible.
Major care — crowns, bridges, dentures, and root canals, commonly covered around 50%.
Two other features shape your real-world costs: most plans have an annual maximum (a cap on what the plan pays in a year), and some have waiting periods before major services are covered.
It is also worth knowing the difference between true dental insurance, which pays a share of covered services, and a dental discount plan, which is not insurance — it simply gives you reduced rates at participating dentists for a membership fee. I will make sure you understand exactly what you are buying.
If you are on Medicare, you have a few paths to dental coverage. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits, though the scope varies widely. A standalone dental plan often provides more comprehensive and predictable coverage, especially for major work. Because I handle both Medicare and standalone dental, I can look at your whole picture and recommend the most cost-effective way to get the dental coverage you want without gaps or surprises.
Use your preventive visits fully — typically two cleanings and exams a year at little or no cost. If you know major work is coming, enroll ahead of time so any waiting periods are behind you when you need treatment. Staying in network, when your plan uses one, keeps your out-of-pocket costs as low as possible.
Dental premiums are simpler than medical insurance, but a few factors still move the price. Your age plays a role, though less dramatically than with medical or life coverage. Whether you enroll as an individual or add a spouse and dependents changes the total. The plan type matters too — a DHMO with a set network will typically run less per month than a PPO that lets you see any licensed dentist. And richer annual maximums or shorter waiting periods on major services usually come with a higher premium in exchange for less out-of-pocket risk if you need a crown or root canal soon after enrolling.
If you only need cleanings and exams, a lower-cost plan with strong preventive coverage may be all you need. If you know major work like a crown, bridge, or dentures is likely in the next year, it is often worth paying a bit more for a plan with a higher annual maximum and a shorter or waived waiting period — I can help you run the numbers either way.

Some plans apply waiting periods to major services like crowns and dentures. I will point out which plans have them and which do not.
With a PPO plan, usually yes. I will check whether your dentist is in a plan's network before you enroll.
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental. A standalone plan, or some Medicare Advantage plans, can provide that coverage.
Yes. Dental is a standalone product, so you can add it any time alongside your existing medical, ACA, or Medicare coverage.
